Next few Sundays
Dear [First Name]
Just a quick update on things that are happening over the next couple of weeks at St Mary's.
28 May 2017
The Rev Chuks and Adanna Iwuagwu will be with us on this day and the baptism of their daughter Grace Chukwudum Ahunnaya Atukanumonye Nwanyieze Iwuagwu will be baptised after the 10.30 am Eucharist. (For those new to the congregation, Chuks was curate at St Mary's until a couple of years ago).
Please note that there is a road race taking place on this day which will close a number of roads. More details here: http://www.greatrun.org/great-womens-run
Please allow enough time to get to church.
4 June 2017 - Pentecost
At the 10.30 am service, everyone is encouraged to wear national dress and to come ready to pray the Lord's Prayer in their first language as we celebrate the gift of the Spirit being poured out upon all people.
At the end of the 10.30 am service there will be a Special General Meeting of the Congregation to consider two amendments of the cathedral constitution. These would allow the Vestry (rather than the Diocesan Synod) to appoint 2 vestry members from the diocese and also allow some urgent business to be done by e-mail between meetings. This meeting will begin at the dismissal. If there is discussion then the meeting will be adjurned and completed after coffee. Questions about this beforehand are welcome either to the Provost or the Vestry Secretary Jim McKillop. The text of the relevant amendments is available here: http://thecathedral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Constitution-changes.pdf
At the 6.30 pm service, the Vice Provost of the Cathedral, the Rev Cedric Blakey will become a canon of the cathedral. The new Synod Clerk and the new Canon Theologian (The Rev Gordon Fyfe and the Rev David Jasper) will also be installed as canons at this service. The canons make up the Cathedral Chapter. All members of the congregation are welcome at this service which celebrates the diocesan ministry of the congregation and also the particular ministry of Cedric amongst us.
General Synod meets in Edinburgh from 8 - 10 June 2017. There is expected to be a certain amount of media interest in this synod as it will be the one at which a decision will be take about whether to allow same-sex couples to marry in Scottish Episcopal Churches. A number of members of the congregation are members of General Synod.
11 June 2017 is Trinity Sunday
15 June 2017 is Corpus Christi which will be marked with a glorious high mass and full ceremonies of the feast. We will be looking for flower petals to scatter for the procession. Those with spare flower petals from the garden are welcome to bring them to the sacristy by 7 pm before the service which begins at 7.30 pm.
