The Vice Provost leads this service from the Cathedral, alone and behind closed doors. Other voices come from members of the congregation, some of whom are self-isolating at home. This Sunday’s sermon is preached by the Provost, the Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth. Pete Smith and Steve Innes read from the Bible, Pat Bennett leads the Intercessions, and the change at the end of the service was recorded by St Mary’s Guild of Change Ringers at the Inveraray Bell Tower before lockdown. Robert Guthrie sings the music for the Ordinary, Mass I (Lux et Origo) in English (Saint Meinrad Kyriale) and in Latin. The Lord’s Prayer in eight different languages is read by the Provost (English), Daniel Kianpisheh (Farsi), Marcos Santana (Spanish), David Kenvyn (Welsh), Laura Bohlander (German), Uche Nwachukwu (Igbo), Ellinore Folkesson (Swedish), and Hanna (Arabic). Music at communion is Adagio, BWV 974 by J.S. Bach, recorded by Les and Rona MacLeod.

An anthem sung by the Choir
Rage, abrasion, disruption, disturbance—these are the words the Rev Francis Gerald Downing uses to describe the actions of the Holy Spirit in his adaptation of the Pentecost hymn Veni Creator Spiritus, sung here by the Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow. In this time of unrest, let our eyes and ears be open to the injustice, the disparity and the systems of oppression that dishonour God’s creation, asking the Holy Spirit to “disrupt and right our unjust ways”.
