Online Worship – 23 May 2021

Pentecost flames

Worship for the Day of Pentecost takes place both in church and online. Seats for the worship taking place in church can be booked at thedatabase.thecathedral.org.uk.

This week the online worship consists of:

  • A Sung Eucharist from St Mary’s Cathedral
  • A hymn – ‘Come down, O Love divine’
  • Special organ music for the Day of Pentecost
  • A video for Young Church members and their households

The Provost leads this service from the Cathedral. The Vice Provost is the preacher. Pat Bennett leads the Intercessions, Becki Cox leads some of the prayers and the Gospel is read by Beth Routledge. Rosamond Thomas sings the mass setting (The Salisbury Service by Grayston Ives) with Frikki Walker, organ. The anthem at Communion, ‘Litany to the Holy Spirit’ by Peter Hurford, is sung by Justine Inns accompanied by Frikki Walker. At the end of the service, the voluntary, Allegro con brio (Sonata IV, i) by Mendelssohn, is played by Steven McIntyre on the organ of Dunblane Cathedral. Steven also plays Dialogue sur les grand jeu sur Veni Creator by N de Grigny, an additional organ voluntary for the Day of Pentecost. The hymn is sung by Magnus Walker accompanied by Frikki Walker.

This week’s Online Worship was produced by artist Sid Smith. Sid joined the congregation for a month, having come to Glasgow for work. Sid is the 2018 winner of the Stuart Morgan Prize for Art History and the Kevin Slingsby Prize for Funnel Vision from the University of Oxford. She uses films and drawings to examine the discomfort of class and illness. This week, Sid created several moving images to accompany the service music for the Day of Pentecost. The artist says, ‘I responded visually to the evocative and atmospheric vocal performances.’

The video of the Sung Eucharist will also be available on Facebook and YouTube. The YouTube video might suit those who prefer to watch on a smart TV.

Sung Eucharist

Special organ music for the Day of Pentecost

Hymn – ‘Come down, O Love divine’

Come down, O Love divine,
seek thou this soul of mine,
and visit it with thine own ardor glowing;
O Comforter, draw near,
within my heart appear,
and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn,
till earthly passions turn
to dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
and let thy glorious light
shine ever on my sight,
and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

Let holy charity
mine outward vesture be,
and lowliness become mine inner clothing:
true lowliness of heart,
which takes the humbler part,
and o‘er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

And so the yearning strong,
with which the soul will long,
shall far outpass the power of human telling;
for none can guess its grace,
till he become the place
wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.

Words: Bianco da Siena; tr: Richard Frederick Littledale
Tune: DOWN AMPNEY, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1906)

Hymn – Hail the day that sees him rise

Hail the day that sees him rise, Alleluya!
Glorious to his native skies; Alleluya!
Christ, awhile to mortals given, Alleluya!
Enters now the highest heaven! Alleluya!

There the glorious triumph waits; Alleluya!,
Lift your heads, eternal gates! Alleluya!
Christ hath vanquished death and sin; Alleluya!
Take the King of glory in. Alleluya!

Lord, though parted from our sight, Alleluya!
Far above yon azure height, Alleluya!
Grant our hearts may thither rise, Alleluya!
Seeking thee beyond the skies. Alleluya!

Words: Charles Wesley (1739)
Tune: LLANFAIR 77.77 and Alleluias, Robert Williams (1817)

Easter Fire

Worship for Easter Day 2021 takes place both in church and online.

There are three services in church – at 9 am, 11 am and 5 pm. Alll the seats at the morning services have been allocated though a waiting list system is in place in case anyone cancels their seat.

This week the online worship consists of:

  • A Sung Eucharist from St Mary’s led by Bishop Kevin
  • A song for Young Church members and their households – Goodness is stronger than evil
  • Details of a Young Church zoom session
  • A hymn – Thine Be The Glory

The service is led by the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway – the Rt Rev Kevin Pearson and the Provost, the Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth is the preacher. The Vice Provost, the Rev Canon Oliver Brewer-Lennon leads the intercessions. Heather O’Connor leads some of the prayers and the gospel is read and acclaimed by Marion Bryans, Fergus Mclachlan and Mounes Sakhaei. The Sung setting is by John Rutter and is sung by Rosamond Thomas, accompanied by Frikki Walker. Frikki also accompanies the hymn which is sung by Magnus Walker. The anthem is Haec Dies by Herbert Howells, sung by the cathedral choir on the CD of the same name. At the end of the service, the voluntary is the Toccata from the Fifth Symphony – Charles-Marie Widor which comes from Frikki Walker’s “Notes Tremendous” CD.

The video of the service of Holy Communion will also be available on Facebook and YouTube. The YouTube video might suit those who prefer to watch on a smart TV.

Good Friday

Christ Crucified in stained glass

This page contains the resources that are provided to help mark Good Friday 2021.

Some people will use them at a time to suit themselves. Others will wish to use them to mark the time between 12 noon and 3 pm when we remember Jesus on the cross.

The Reading of the Passion

The reading of the Passion according to John is something that we use on Good Friday. This is available at this link: http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=282326310

This is a text which needs to be read carefully and thoughtfully. The term ‘the Jews’ in John’s Gospel applies to particular individuals and not to the whole Jewish people. Insofar as we ourselves turn against Christ, we are responsible for his death. The words which are translated as “the Jews” could also be translated as “the Judeans”.

Members of the congregation are invited to read the text for themselves at some point on Good Friday.

Sermons and Music

It is usually our custom to mark the time between 12 noon and 3 pm on Good Friday with a series of sermons and thoughtful music from the cathedral musicians. This year the sermons and the music are all available here on this page.

In the year that is past, the development of Online Worship has meant that the visual resources of the cathedral have been particularly important, perhaps especially important during times of lockdown, when no access to the building has been possible.

In this series of meditations, the cathedral clergy reflect on the experience of six images of people featured in either the murals or the stained glass, who were present during Christ’s passion. The eyes of these images have looked down on a silent cathedral in Glasgow for much of the last year. The eyes of these same people saw the events of the first Good Friday. These meditations take us into their experience.
