LGBT History Month – #15 – Love means Love

Love means Love

This badge celebrates a statement made by the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, Bishop Mark Strange.

The statement can be read online here: https://www.scotland.anglican.org/primus-addresses-anglican-communion-primates-meeting-scottish-episcopal-churchs-decision-change-canon-marriage/

After the General Synod voted for marriage equality in 2017, the primates of the Anglican Communion sanctioned the Scottish Episcopal Church by excluding members of the church from representing the Anglican Communion ecumenically and from holding a small number of offices for three years. Bishop Mark responded to this by saying that he would do everything he could to rebuild relationships “but that will be done from the position our church has now reached in accordance with its synodical processes and in the belief that Love means Love.”

LGBT History Month – #13 – OUT

Out

Coming out is often presumed to be some kind of once in a lifetime event. The reality for most LGBT people is that they have to come out again and again in life in situation after situation in which their identity is not the norm.

This includes coming out at school, college, to a doctor, to parents, to a spouse, from the pulpit, to a friend, to an enemy or rival, in a sports club, to a sibling and countless occasions when false assumptions have been made.

Many find the experience of coming out a liberating one in the end. However, it also has to be acknowledged that coming out can be a traumatic experience. No-one ever knows how another person will behave if one comes out to them. Sometimes people have lost their home, their children, their job as a result of coming out.

Ultimately, coming out is about living as a person of integrity and truth.

Sometimes LGBT people like to meet in LGBT spaces precisely because they want to meet in social spaces where coming out is completely unnecessary.

Online Worship – 29 Nov 2020

Advent Candle

During Level 4 lockdown, regular in-person worship at the Cathedral is suspended. We pray for the wellbeing of the city by practising our faith in different ways and, in particular, by worshipping at home rather than in our building. Once the restrictions are lifted, the cathedral will re-open.

Online Worship for 29 November 2020 can be found in several videos.

  • Three videos that form a service of Holy Communion
  • A hymn: ‘Christ be our Light’
  • Two videos for members of the Young Church and their households

The Rev Canon Audrey O’Brien Stewart, Canon Missioner for the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway, leads this service from the Cathedral. The Vice Provost is the preacher. The Provost leads some of the prayers, Taylor Driggers-McDowall leads the Intercessions, and Zoe Johnson reads the Gospel. Frikki Walker plays the organ and piano at this service. Morven Bremner sings the mass setting (St Anne’s Mass by James MacMillan) and the music at Comminion (‘O Light of Life’ by Mack Wilberg) is sung by Christine Walker. The voluntary played on the Cathedral’s chamber organ at the end of the service is ‘Wachet Auf’ by Johann Walter.

A Blessing for Pilgrims

The following recording is of the ‘Irish Blessing’ by Bob Chilcott from a CD entitled ‘Listen’ by the Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow

It contains the words of a blessing appropriate for making a pilgrimage.

The pictures were taken by members of the congregation of roads around the city of Glasgow, as the March 2020 lockdown was imposed and the streets became quiet.

May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be ever at your back
May the sunshine warm upon your face
And the rain fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you, may God hold you
Ever in the palm of his hand

Online Survey – August 2020

Congregational Survey - August 2020

A re-opening plan is currently being devised by members of the Vestry that will be submitted to Bishop Kevin in order to seek permission to re-establish some services in the cathedral building. The Scottish Government and the Scottish Episcopal Church require such things as hand sanitizer being available and used, 2 meter distancing in church, face masks being worn and clear protocols about entering and leaving the building and about receiving communion. At the moment, music can only be from instruments that are not blown by the mouth and only one singer is permitted. After a service a congregation is required to disperse. Church buildings have to be cleaned before and after use. Services are likely to be shorter than our busiest services used to be and will be limited to 50 people in the building at any one time.

It is clear that not everyone who used to attend the cathedral in person will feel able to come to services at the moment and some form of online worship will continue. Initially provision will focus on Sunday worship and services to allow the baptisms of those who have been waiting to be baptised. Re-opening other services and activities will be a gradual process. The re-opening activities will be kept under review and the pattern of what is possible in church will depend on the levels of the covid crisis, government and church guidelines and the capacity of both members of staff and volunteers.

This survey is to help in planning the next few months.

Please fill in this survey for yourself as an individual. If there is anyone else in your household who relates to St Mary's then please ask them to fill it in themselves.

Online Worship

I have engaged with the Cathedral's weekly offering of Online Worship
I find the online worship nourishes me spiritually
I will continue to engage with Online Worship, even when the building re-opens for public worship
It is important for Online Worship to be a service of Holy Communion
I am willing to contribute videos to Online Worship
I have watched the Young Church videos
Which of the following have you engaged with (check all that apply)
I have engaged with Online Worship from other congregations

Re-opening for Public Worship

If there were worship in church in the next few weeks
Before the Covid crisis, I attended St Mary's...
