The Visitation by Pontormo

A podcast series from St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow and the Iona Community

The Transfiguration

Transcript   |   Iona Community Liturgy

From the composer
The chant, Quicumque christum quaeritis, is a setting of a colourful 12th-century poem, the hymn to the Transfiguration, which speaks of primordial chaos, boundless sky, and eternal glory. The music is in four short movements, each a digital ‘transfiguration’ of the plainchant melody and the cyanotype image. The chant is first sung, as if liturgically, but by many voices belonging to just one person—an ancient unison by modern means. The second movement reimagines the chant as a canon, each voice comprising a synthesised waveform with the characteristics of a theremin, accompanied by a human voice that never breathes. The third movement uses colour and brightness information from the cyanotype image to modulate each note of the plainchant, a polyphonic cacophony of voices. The frequencies responsible for the timbre of each note and of the drone beneath are taken from a frequency-space representation of the image obtained by a mathematical transfiguration—the two-dimensional Fourier transform. A fundamental pillar of our understanding of our world and the technology that connects us, the Fourier Transform represents information using a sum of wave-like patterns. The fourth movement is a series of disjoint ‘pixels’ whose waveforms are generated from the wave-pattern within the image, with the red, green and blue components each represented by their own series of pitches.

Lucernarium Easter 2020

Candle in the Cathedral

A liturgy of candle-lighting in a time of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Order of Service is set out below. Download a PDF with musical responses here.

LUCERNARIUM
for Eastertide, during a time of isolation

Before this service, there should be as little artificial light as possible. One candle is lit as the Leader begins.

I. Little Blessing & Short Lesson

V. Light and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.

Jesus said, ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one lights a lamp to put it out of sight, but on a stand where it gives light for everyone in the house. And you, like the lamp, must shed light among others, so that they may see the good you do, and give glory to your Father in heaven.’

II. Prayer for Light

Before the Prayer is first sung
Let us pray.

Eternal God, who led your ancient people into freedom by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night: Grant that we who walk in the light of your presence may rejoice in the liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

During the singing of Phos hilaron, the People may bring their candles and place them in a window of their homes. Other candles may be lighted. Incense may be used here.

III. Phos hilaron

Antiphon
The same God who said, ‘Out of darkness let light shine,’ has caused light to shine within us.

O gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Repeat Antiphon.

Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Repeat Antiphon.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds. Repeat Antiphon.

Good Friday Meditations

It is our custom on Good Friday to reflect on the events of the first Good Friday by reading the Passion and by meditating on it. One of the ways we do this is to gather from 12 noon to 3 pm and hear sermons reflecting on the passion. We share silence and listen to music for meditation.

This year there are five meditations which are based on five scenes from Gwyneth Leech’s Kelvingrove Triptych which hangs in St Anne’s Chapel. Each meditation is accompanied by organ music from the cathedral organists Frikki Walker and Steven McIntyre.

The Passion

The first video is an audio only reading of the Passion Gospel by the Provost of St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow, the Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth

The Meditations

About the Kelvingrove Triptych

Three panels, each seventeen feet high by seven feet wide, hanging on the north wall of St Anne’s Chapel in St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow

The triptych depicts the Easter Passion set in Kelvingrove Park. First, the eye encounters the figures at the bottom of each panel—actual portraits of regular park users on a late summer afternoon when the shadows are long: Sikh gentlemen, a group of Muslim women and children, cyclists, dog walkers and the ubiquitous nursery nannies and their charges. Certain figures will be familiar to members of Saint Mary’s congregation—Alastair Young, a past verger of the Cathedral, and Oran the golden retriever both appear in the centre panel. The artist’s daughter appears twice in the same painting—once as a small baby in red in a pushchair and then as a toddler walking beside the pushchair, recording the span of time taken in the completion of the canvases. As the eye travels upwards, the viewer discovers the Easter story. The left panel is Gethsemane. Reclining figures in the park on a sunny afternoon become, at the top, the disciples who cannot stay awake. In the upper left is the Arrest of Jesus, with Judas embracing Christ in the centre of a crowd of soldiers wielding spears and torches. The centre panel is dominated by the Deposition. The male disciples have all run away; the women are taking Jesus down from the cross to lay him in the tomb. On the right is the Noli Me Tangere. Mary Magdalene encounters the Risen Christ in the garden and does not recognise him. When at last she knows who he is, he says “do not touch me” (noli me tangere). He is real yet transfigured. The composition of the three religious scenes is inspired by Italian frescoes of the early Renaissance: Giotto’s Arrest of Jesus in the Arena Chapel in Padua, a Deposition in the Lower Church of St Francis in Assisi and Fra Angelico’s Noli Me Tangere in the Monastery of San Marco in Florence.
